Fog

Jim Dine is a representative American artist who was involved in Pop Art with Andy Warhol. Dine repetitively employs subjects and materials such as heart symbols, bathrobes, tools, Pinocchio, and wood which are all objects he found by chance in his everyday life and into which he put his emotion.

He was inspired by hand tools as a child when working at his grandfather’s hardware shop in Cincinnati. A tool is an extension of his hand as well as a symbol of his work’s physical properties. Pinocchio in his work Fog is a trope that has constantly appeared in his works since 1993. Pinocchio, the protagonist of the children’s novel in which a wooden marionette goes through adventure and adversity to become a real boy, is not only a symbolic object representing our spirit to challenge but also a self-portrait of the experimental, creative artist.
