This is Shahnoza in Stone. 08.
This is brought to life by Julian Opie, a pop artist and a former member of “yBa(young British artists),” which brought contemporary art back to its heyday in the UK. He was internationally recognized for the world of his artwork of simplifying movements and characteristics of a person with the minimum use of lines.
In this work, dynamic dancing movements of Shahnoza, a dancer from Teheran, were captured so that the moment of beautiful movement of the body could be carved on a stone. Shahnoza, the model of this work, is a dancer working at a strip club in Soho in Manhattan, New York. As the artist usually takes friends or pedestrians on a street as the model of his works, he spontaneously asked her to be his model when he saw her perform and made about 2,000 pictures and video clips while she was dancing. He underwent the process of simplifying the images, which he took, only for silhouettes to be left, with a computer. The shape of a person, simplified with only a few lines and forms, signifies anonymity of individuals in modern society and a pleasant and familiar pop icon thanks to dynamic physical movements.
