Your Long Journey
Fré Ilgen (1956~), a Dutch artist based in Germany, is not only an artist but a theorist and curator. He takes an interest in eastern culture and philosophy, such as Zen Buddhism, and puts invisible concepts, such as time or the flow of nature’s order into large mobile art pieces. He is active worldwide, presenting diverse art pieces, including stabiles, or drawings, other than mobile ones. His work [Your Long Journey] consists of a total of 14 sections, including a circular-shaped object and mobiles of various shapes that flow along the ceiling. The artist mentioned that his works had been influenced by Kandinsky, a painter representing the field of abstract paintings in geometric shapes. Each section of the piece has a title, such as “Rolling Rock,” “Growing Tree,” “Butterfly and Dragon,” or “Flying of Wild Goose.” Major components of the bent and twisted piece depict the long journey of our life as its name suggests. The artist intended to express the dynamics of the life, in which one grows, while standing up to all obstacles and challenges, through the art piece.
