Gallery 1&2, Sehwa Museum of Art
Sehwa Museum of Art, affiliated with the Taekwang Group, presents its 2025 spring exhibition Floating World: Bed, Bath, Bus. The exhibition brings us face-to-face with the many facets of the world upon which our bodies stand and live. The world is multifaceted and intricate, shaped through the knowledge and customs accumulated by humans and layered with complex systems. Reality, which unfolds before our eyes through multiple layers, does not appear as the Real itself. Instead, it manifests as a mixture of illusion and fiction, irrationality and illogic. For example, a world that a person once firmly believed in could experience a “new (dis)order” or a technological revolution, leading to a period of upheaval on a personal, communal, or national level. Conversely, something extremely trivial and ordinary may act as a source of potent energy, capable of transforming an individual’s daily life or their perception of the world. Thus, extremely realistic scenes overlay the real world, while unreal scenes slip and skew away, creating scenes of mixed realities. Visual signs, symbols, and images—hidden or suddenly captured in every corner of reality—are processed through the practices of contemporary artists and intermingle in this exhibition, opening up spaces for thought by traversing the boundaries between resemblance and difference from the real world.
Floating World: Bed, Bath, Bus endeavors to delve into the ambiguity of the world, a complex and delicate state that defies neat division or segmentation. If the driving force of Surrealism, which sought to transform reality, lay in its early 20th-century rejection of reason and rationality in favor of dreams and the unconscious, 21st-century contemporary artists bring us into contact with other worlds by hybridizing the coexistence of reality and unreality as well as the ambiguity of reality through imagination. Each artist’s distinct imagination loosely unravels the complex layers of reality. Encountering the works of Korean artists Myeongbeom Kim, Raejung Sim, Jisan Ahn, Leebinsoyeon, Sungeun Chang, Kyungwoo Chun, and Sun Woo, alongside international artists Issy Wood, Laure Prouvost, and Piper Bangs, visitors will come across worlds explored through curiosity and doubt. We chose this as the exhibition’s subtitle, hoping for moments of escape from the mundane. Moments of release are embedded within our repetitive daily lives. In the midst of trying to sleep, to wash, or to move from place to place, a transcendent force begins to surface—one that casts a new light on reality and gestures toward its reconfiguration. Amid actions and places that spark unexpected ideas, we carry the potential to drift toward another, floating world. In Floating World: Bed, Bath, Bus, the images that permeate one another traverse the complex terrain of reality, guiding us toward new sensations and ways of thinking. This exhibition provides an opportunity to momentarily depart from the fixed hierarchies of reality—rejecting and crossing through them—to open up space for unfettered imagination.
