Shark, Bite the New World

2021. 10. 19. - 2022. 2. 27.

Gallery 1&2, Sehwa Museum of Art

This exhibition is inspired by Shark Bites Plane, which was originally presented at Ilju Art House in 2001. Celebrating the 1st year of the Ilju Art House’s inauguration, the exhibition consisted of artworks that explored multi-layered meanings of everyday life which embedded forms of deviation. Instead of presenting formal aesthetics of media art of that time, the exhibition presented artworks that demonstrated familiar usages of media that already entered contemporary individual’s lives. The audience-friendly art experience could help review the value of everyday life and predict our lives today, where forms of media have become common everywhere.

Entering this new era of the pandemic in 2021, Sehwa Museum of Art reconstructs the “shark” exhibition. The “shark” of the old exhibition title symbolizes an untamed being representing a natural organism. The imaginary proposition “Shark Bites Plain” implied the act of deviation through art. The new exhibition reuses the word “shark” to relate to the past exhibition and suggests how the old shark, who once dreamed of deviation, should respond to the collapsed everyday life of today. Today’s “shark” may be the artist, the audience, or anyone who misses the ordinary good old days before the pandemic.

The exhibition reinvites the five artists who presented their stories of everyday life in this exhibition held at the very same location, initially 20 years ago. The Ilju Art House now has been replaced by a museum, and their works have gained more depth as time has passed and are in the process of turning towards other directions. Today, when everyday activities are restricted and the limits of human bodies appear obvious, we suggest seeing through the eyes of these five artists to hold ourselves upright in this new distorted routine. Their distinct, creative world of artworks will help the audience adjust the distortion of today and discover our own way to travel around the new world.
