Kintsugi Classroom

2026. 4. 30. Thur.

2F Lecture Room

As part of the exhibition Invisible Hands, Startling Colors, a Kintsugi workshop will be held. The workshop offers participants the opportunity to restore broken objects and return them to everyday use. The workshop will be led by craft artist Sumi Kim. Take time to repair broken ceramics, embrace the process of healing, and enjoy a meaningful and restorative experience.

“Through the conscious act of restoring something,
we recover spiritual connections and heal ourselves.”
— Nakamura Kunio, Kintsugi Notebook

Kintsugi is a traditional lacquer craft technique in which broken or cracked ceramics are carefully rejoined and decorated using gold or silver powder, known as maki-e. Participants will repair cracked or chipped vessels themselves and finish them with gold or silver detailing. If you have a cherished piece of tableware that is broken, cracked, or chipped, bring it to the workshop and give it new life through a simple Kintsugi method. This session will introduce accessible techniques using synthetic lacquer and resin, and will be finished with keshi-hun (pure gold powder).

What to Bring
Please choose one of the following:

  • One broken ceramic item, or
  • Two chipped ceramic items

All materials must be brought by participants. Please note that packaging after the session may be difficult, and items must be carried by hand.
